COLONIAL TREASURES: GUANAJUATO & SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE SEPTEMBER 13 - 22, 2024
This ten-day tour takes place in the Central Highlands of Mexico in two Spanish Colonial gems, Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende.
Nestled in the rich mining hills of the Sierra Madre Occidental, these two historically important and visually compelling towns share a rich history of conquest and revolution, yet each has its own unique identity and dynamic personality.
In Guanajuato City we will discover the wonders of this 16th-century mining town built along the contours of an ancient river. Its steep hillsides are dotted with multi-color houses tumbling downhill to the center of town and underneath the city is an intricate system of tunnels—the old riverbed—that quietly move traffic across the busy metropolis out of sight, allowing visitors to enjoy the pedestrian walking streets above.
While here, we will visit art and history museums, ceramic studios, and enjoy live music performances in stunning locales.
From there we will travel the scenic mountain route to San Miguel with a stop in Dolores Hidalgo to further our knowledge of Mexican history, shop for talavera pottery, and taste some of the most outrageous ice cream flavors ever: elote, aguacate, queso, mole, mezcal… y más.
We will spend the next several days in San Miguel de Allende, a charming, user-friendly, and popular Mexican town known for its picturesque charm as well as the bounty of 4-star restaurants, art galleries, shops, and boutiques found there.
Aside from enjoying the #1 activities of San Miguel—shopping and eating—we will tour the Historic Center; visit several private collections of folk, fine, and fantastical art; spend a day exploring a nearby archeological site; all while deepening our knowledge and understanding of the crucial role this area played in Mexico’s war of Independence from Spain.
Our time in these very distinct locales offers us a well-rounded experience of Mexico’s storied past, beautiful present, and exciting future.
