After wanting to do this tour for years (ever since I heard about the Monkey Men running barefoot over burning embers) and I'm just delighted that it's finally going to happen in 2012.The adventure begins in Mexico City, where I have all kinds of cultural and culinary activities planned. From there we'll fly to Chiapa de Corzo, where we'll visit my pals and spend a few hours on a boat ride down the Sumidero Canyon. The mountain top colonial city of San Cristobal de las Casas comes next, where we'll meet up with our super stellar local experts for this trip, Carol Karasik and Chip Miller. Chip and Carol will lead our daily forays into the Maya villages to experience the Maya-Catholic mash-up celebrations of Carnival, each day a different village, another facet of the holiday, and a unique way of celebrating.
I love every single My Mexico Tour I do. But....I have to say that this one just might be the perfect tour, encompassing as it does the charms of city, small town, and village life as well as two of the most impressive forces of nature I know: Diana Kennedy and the yearly migration of the monarch butterfly. Add to that a stunning backdrop of one of central Mexico's most beautiful states, unique culinary offerings, many of Mexico's finest folk and fine artists, and a roster of friends who can't wait to meet you, and well, it's "The Perfect Storm" of a tour in a very, very good way.
SEMANA SANTA IN GUANAJUATO &
SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE
March 29 – April 9, 2012
This is another tour I've intended to do for years that is at last a reality in 2012. When I lived in Guanajuato I witnessed the Semana Santa celebrations there and was impressed with the pageantry and visceral faith of the people. San Miguel really goes all out for this week, but I was never able to attend because of work. This year I'll be able to see and share with you both these gorgeous towns during this very special time of year. These two towns are my Mexican homes-away-from-home, and my friends in both towns will welcome us with open arms to visit their private homes and art collections, kitchens and gardens, elegant restaurants and funky roadside taquerias. This isn’t a "religious tour," I should add; it is a cultural tour with Mexico’s rich and colorful religious pageantry providing a magnificent backdrop for our adventures.
